We’re feeling very nostalgic this week. As we prepare to celebrate the Centre’s 10th birthday, we take a look back to when we first opened our doors in 2007.

At the time, it was one of the largest regional shopping centre concept outside of the capital, with over 185,000 square feet of retail space planned and major international retailers already on board.

The construction of Athlone Towncentre was a mammoth task involving the largest crane in Ireland at that time.

The air of excitement surrounding the arrival of retailers including Marks & Spencer, Zara, River Island and H&M was palpable on that chilly November morning in 2007 as the centre opened its doors.

Thousands of eager shoppers, including some famous faces like Pippa O’ Connor, turned up to experience what the ‘new shopping centre’ had to offer.

Were you there? Check out the footage from our opening day to see if you spot anyone you know!

Fast forward ten quick years, with the worst recession in living memory thrown in for good measure, Athlone Towncentre is now a popular retail destination for shoppers across the midlands and further afield,  and it’s all thanks to the generous support of you, our loyal customers, so we’d love for you to join in our celebrations!

We’ve got lots of fun planned for you from the 1st to the 5th of November, including fashion shows, voucher giveaways, discount nights and loads more. Click here to see a full list of Birthday Celebrations

If you would like to see more archives from Athlone Towncentre, including the original architect’s concept model, you can visit our display in centre from Wednesday November 1st.
